The film score for Mel Gibson’s Scotland epos BRAVEHEART earned Horner his fifth Oscar nomination in 1996. His most dangerous competitor for

the prestigious film award was he himself with his second nomination for the score of APOLLO 13. The BRAVEHEART soundtrack definitely estab- lished Horner as one of the most versatile and sought-after film composers in Hollywood.

Horner composed a score that – like the film itself – is both beautiful and brutal, sad and hopeful, subtle and grand. Horner effortlessly manages to capture all the emotions

of the film, thereby communicating them to the audience. He achieves this by combining classic symphonic elements and the usage of Celtic instruments such as the bagpipes, which take us back to the 13th century in Scotland with their unusual sound.
